The Saint-Louis Research Group specializes in the discovery and characterization of new Fluorescent Organic Materials. Fluorescent organic compounds (FOC) are widely used in the materials and imaging technology fields due to their potential applications in molecular sensors, laser optical recordings, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) materials. A challenge in building FOCs is the ability to tune their luminescence wavelength to near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths with high fluorescent quantum yields. Saint-Louis Group studies the effect of introducing different electronic moieties to FOCs in order to manipulate their fluorescence NIR with high fluorescent quantum yield. A second challenge is to control the quenching of fluorescence in a high concentrated solution or in the solid-state also known as the “Aggregation-Cause Quenching” (ACQ). Which means that as isolated molecules, they will emit fluorescence with high quantum yield. However, once in a high concentrated solution or in the solid state the fluorescent will be quenched. Our research will study the effect in inserting propeller-shaped rotator compounds in FOCs that suffer from ACQ to overcome the fluorescence quenching problem.
